  1. In the beginning of the book Matilda was the kind of girl that hated chores. She did everything her mother told her to do. She was also sad that the fever was coming. In the middle she had to go away from her mom but wanted to stay because her mom had a bad case of the yellow fever. When Matilda returned home her mother was gone and the coffee shop was broken into. At the end Matilda became very fond of a little girl whose mother had died because of the fever. Matilda's grandfather had died. Her mother lives.

In the beginning of the story Matilda Cook was a teenage girl who didn't really like to wake up in the morning but had to do chores for her families coffee house and always tried to sneak out to get out of the work.(pgs.1-11) Matilda also liked a boy named Nathaniel Benson but never expressed her feelings because her mother did not approve. In the middle of the book Matilda found out her mother was missing and she realized that she was not going to find her anytime soon so Matilda took on the role of the mother or caretaker for the coffee house and for a young girl, helping her old cook Eliza with fever victims, and by taking over the coffeehouse.(161-227)When Matilda took over the coffeehouse she did not really care about her duties and never really complained about what she had to do to keep the shop going successfully.(228-230)In the beginning of the story Matilda's mother mentioned a boy named Nathaniel and Matilda never really said how she felt about him. Matilda changed from the beginning of the book by treating Nathaniel like more than just a friend. At the end of the story when matilda found out that he didn't die she realized that she had developed feelings for him.(216-233)At the end of the story when Matilda's mother returned home she still helped her mother keep track of the coffeehouse so altogether Matilda has changed in several different ways but the main change that she preformed in the book was that she had to grow up to help do what was right.

  12. In the beginning of the story Matilda Cook proves to be an average lazy teenager who would not get out of bed when her mother instructed her to, and she would much rather play than do work of any kind(1-11). However, in the middle of the story Matilda's lazy attitude quickly changed after she and her grandfather were abandoned by the Ludingtons and she had to take care of her grandfather who was thought to have yellow fever(63-95).
Another example of how Matilda changed was when she found Nell and could not find anybody to take care of her, so rather than leaving Nell to die Matilda decided to take care of her instead(161-164). After finding Nell Matilda found her friend Eliza and helped her deliver food, clean, and take care of Nell and the Twins, even when they became ill with yellow fever(179-208).
In the end Matilda had changed from a lazy teenager to a mature young lady and had taken over the Coffee Shop business with Eliza.

  15. In the begining of the book Matioda Cook helped run a coffehouse with her mom and grandfather. Her friend Polly got sick and came down with yellow fever and ended up dying.(1-13) I think this changed Matilda's mind in how to act because Polly had died. After all of this happened mother came down with yellow fever.(62-77) Matilda and her grandfather were then forced to flee Philadelphia. After they fled Mattie came down with yellow fever, and we thought that grandfather did too, but he didn't. He then carried Mattie to Bush Hill where she could recoperate.(105-113) After that Mattie really had to start to grow up and fast. She had to because grandfather had died because robbers came and strangled him.(138-149)Mattie didn't know how or what to do so she went searching for her mother and found Eliza. After it all mother came home to the coffehouse.(219-227)

Everyday she tries to keep up with her chores helping out her mother and Eliza at home and at the coffee shop. But she has a lot on her mind like her friend Polly and others dying. She is starting to get a hang of whats going on in Philadelphia.(pg.1-69)

  22. At the beginning of the book, Matilda is the average teenager living in the year 1793. She doesn't like to work, and dislikes getting up early (pages one through three). Throughout the book, however, Matilda learns how to take care of herself and matures into a young adult.

Throughout the book, Matilda is faced with difficulties, and learns how to be a strong person. The challenges she faces prove that she is strong willed. One challenge she faces is the death of her grandfather (page 147). By dealing with the death of a loved one, Matilda learns to support herself and live on her own. By the end of the book, Matilda is a strong, independent girl.

A third way Matilda changes, is by becoming a hard worker. While dealing with yellow fever, the death of a family member, and being on her own, Matilda becomes stronger emotionally and physically. By the end of the book, Matilda learns how to run the Coffee house by herself and raise Nell. When her mother returns (page 234), Matilda is successfully running the coffee house.

Throughout the book, Matilda becomes hard working, independent, and strong willed.

  25. In the begining, Mattie was lazy and always tried to get out of work. When yellow fever came along though, mattie just wanted to do arrands. After her mother got yellow fever, Mattie and her grandfather had to leave philadelphia with a farmer. After a while, the farmer claimed they had yellow fever and left them. Mattie was left alone to take care of her grandfather. Soon she got yellow fever and survived. They then went back to philadelphia. After a while they saw that they were robbed. Mattie used what little they had left to take care of her grandfather. When they were robbed again, mattie's grandfather was killed. The next day, Mattie found Nell alone in a building. She and Nell went to live with Eliza and her family for a while. Mattie then decided that she was going to run the coffeehouse. That is how Mattie changed from the begining to the end of the story.

  28. Matilda obviously for one , changes by recovering her sickness in pages (96-110) of the novel. I think Matilda did a great deal of changing when her grandfather died . throughout pages (147-154) she showed more maturity , bravery and she was more amenable to the upcoming challenges this disease was causing to the city of Philadelphia. Most of all , even in the beginning , when she didn't like to do chores , and acted lazy , towards the end, she cleaned up her act and even took care of another child! On page 161 , Matilda ran across an abandoned child. Nell's mother was killed due to yellow fever. Matilda took the girl in and cared for here , even though she didn't really have much either. But in conclusion , The experience Matilda went through made her stronger and more mature!

  31. There are many ways that Matilda changes through out the book. The three main ways that she changed was, in the beginning she was stuburn. When Matilda woke up, her mother yelled for her to come downstairs. She made a face at the door because she thought her mom didn't care that she just saved her quilt from Silas(page 3).

In the middle Matilda becomes braver. When the house got broken into she helped grandfather fight the robbers away(page145). Also, when Grandfather died she made sure Grandfather had a proper burial(page153&154).

At the end she matured since the beginning. She made coffee for everyone before they woke up(page 242).

Those were the 3 reasons horw she changed during the book!

Another change she went through was the fact that her grandfather had died because a robber and his associate had came to rob the Coffee House and grandfather was attacked by one of the robbers. The last change I am going to list is when Matilda was walking back from the cemetary in which grandfather was buried, she spotted a little girl who's mother had died and father was no where to be found and decided to raise her herself. As you can see she took up many responsibilities.

  43. Matilda changes a lot from beginning to end for example in the beginning she is very lazy and complains about doing any type of work. Then her mother got sick and her and grandfather went to the country. She got sick and grandfather carried her from the tree they were dumped off the carriage to because the driver thought grandfather had the fever. When Matilda and grandfather returned to Philadelphia the coffee shop was robbed for all the food so every day Matilda would go out for food and water for her and grandfather. Then they got robbed again and this time grandfather got hurt the robber banged his head against the floor and that night he died. Matilda was alone and she went out and found a little girl named Nell her parents were dead that same day she found Elizah and every day she helped Elizah do her job. Then she and Elizah ran the coffee house until mother returned. This is how Matilda changed from beginning to end of the novel.

  45. There are a few ways Matilda changes throughout the story. In the beginning of the story it tells that Matilda's family owned the Cook Coffeehouse. She was lazy and often complained alot but she was expected to expected to wake up and go to work at the Coffeehouse. Matilda barely got any free time.
In the middle of the story there is a rapid disease speading called Yellow Fever. At this time Matilda changed by caring & being more respectful.
Towards the ending of the book Matilda's mother catches yellow fever. Which changed her actions alot from the beginning. By that means Matilda became a stronger teen and was very consistant about helping her mother.

Those are the three ways I think Matilda changed throughout the book!

  46. In the being of the story fever 1973 Mattie had change though out the story in so many ways.Mattie was like a normale teenager. In chapter 1 and 2 as i read it Seem to me that Mattie was lazzy and complained alot. But thoughout the story when Mattie's mom got sick in chapters 9 and 10 and her grandfather died in chapter 19.She became more stronge and she wasn't lazzy anymore. Because she noticed that without her mom and grandfather or Eliza there that there would be nobody there to take care of her.

  48. In the beginning of the book Matilda was much more immature than she is in the end of the book, her experiences from the time her mother catches yellow fever to the end when her and her mother are reunited are what causes this. She would try to get herself out of doing chores in favor of daydreaming about turning the coffee shop into the best in Philadelphia, but going through the trials of watching her mother suffer with yellow fever, and then having to leave her sick and possibly dyeing, as well as losing her grandfather a little later in the story leaving her alone in a mostly deserted shadow of what Philadelphia once was. Without anyone to look out for her or any safe means of getting food or water, this forced her to mature some, enough so that She was able to handle the stress of caring for another person when she is forced to take care of a little girl named Nell who had lost her mother to yellow fever. She also was lucky enough that very same day she found Eliza helping fever victims for the free African society. One more example of how much Mattie changes is when after Eliza takes Mattie and Nell back to the home she shares with her brother and nephews, and is subjected to doing constant grueling chores and constant criticism from an old woman who looks after Eliza’s nephews, however the whole time she does these chores and redoes them two or three times she never really complains to anyone. These are the reasons I believe that Mattie did change much over the course of the story.

  58. At the beginning of the book, Matilda is your typical teen. Living in the year 1793, she doesn't like to work, and hates getting up early (pg 3). Through the book, however, Mattie learns how to take care of herself and turns into a young adult.
Starting of, Mattie complains lot. But after a while, she learns the more important things in life. then starts to appreciate it a bit more.
Matilda becomes a hard worker. Dealing with yellow fever, the death of granddad, and being on her own. Matilda is now stronger emotionally and physically. By the end of the book, Matilda learns how to run the Coffee house by herself. When her mother returns (page 234), Matilda is already successfully running the coffee house.

  59. Mattie was born in 1779 and is 14 years old at the time of the events described in the novel. She is the narrator and the principle protagonist. Mattie is present in every scene described in the novel and, indeed, is generally the driving force behind most of the action.

In the novel's opening scenes, Mattie is described as a typical teenager with a strongly modern view on life. Although capable of hard work, she much prefers an easy life and looks for ways to avoid physical labor while enjoying the good things life has to offer. Mattie is content to let others, such as her mother or Polly Logan, perform the hard work; she would prefer to eat a breakfast sweetened with sugar while someone else scrubs the pots. she also over come a lot in the story. she goes through a lot of thing....
